 Short Kick 2

Afshin Afshar (lastkick.com) – We last left Steel of Azin Coach Hamid Estili after the match against Moghavemat in Shiraz. Azin had just won the match and Estili had announced his resignation. Fast forward one day or two and the club’s back office is claiming that Estili had never really resigned and that he is still in charge! It will take another day or two for us to figure out what is really going on. If you ask me, Estili has really resigned, but the club has no immediate backup, so they are trying to buy some time.  Read more…

What if Mahmoud were the IFF Chief?!

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Afshin Afshar (lastkick.com) – A couple of months ago, in one of my soccer blogs I wrote a tongue in cheek “What if” post. The question was “What if Ahmadinejad became the Head of Iran Football Federation?” A few of the possibilities I suggested were:

1)    He would claim doping to be the natural right of all Iranian football players, and invest significant amount of money in secret underground steroid manufacturing plants.

2)    He would give fiery speeches about the super duper pill that would make Iranian football a world football superpower, and threaten to defeat the Brazilian, German, Italian, French, and English national teams in a blink of an eye.

3)    He would accuse Sepp Blatter of being a puppet of the Brazilian Football Federation.

4)    He would deny the fact that Brazil has won five World Cups and would suggest world football experts research the matter independently.

And last but not least  Read more…

ShortKicks

Short Kick 2

Afshin Afshar (lastkick.com) – The “Rocket” has returned to base! Mehdi Mahdavikia who has been playing his football in Germany for the last 11 years signed with IPL side Steel of Azin yesterday. Mahdavikia follows a stream of veterans who have landed with the Tehran side over the last year or so; amongst them are Ali Karimi and Freydoon Zandi.

The other significant move by Steel of Azin was the hiring of veteran football man Mostafa Ajorlou as the President of the club. Ajorlou was involved with Pas FC for a few years just before they moved from Tehran to Hamadan. He was instrumental in signing of Turkish coach Mustafa Denizli under whom Pas came within a match of winning the title four years ago. The rumors that Denizli may be coming back to town have already started floating around.  Read more…

Proud to be an Iranian

Tehran's Azadi Stadium

Shideh Afshar-Malek – A few days ago I saw a post on Face Book titled “Proud to be an Iranian”. I opened it and there were pictures of famous historical places in Iran and many of them in Tehran. Many of these pictures were from recreation sites around the capital, my home town.

My first reaction was to share this with my friends on Facebook, but then I thought to go through all the pictures first and then share them. As I was going through them along with pride there came the sense of sorrow and regret. I remembered why I left my beautiful country and why I have not been back. Read more…

Iranian Professional League: Round 24

Iranian Pro League

Afshin Afshar (lastkick.com) – Week 23 of the Iranian Professional League got underway and all matches but the one between Esteghlal of Tehran and Steel of Azin were played on Friday.

Perspolis 1 – 0 Rah-Ahan

The Reds got their first victory under new coach Ali Daei and moved up to the third spot thanks to a single goal by Mohsen Khalili scored a quarter of an hour into the match. Fifty thousand fans attended the match in Tehran’s Azadi stadium.

Understandably, Daei was in good mood in his post match interview. He was generally happy with his team’s performance, but singled out his midfield for their hard work and creativity.  Read more…

Tractor passion stirs up ethnic tensions

Tractor fans

Afshin Afshar (lastkick.com) – Something potentially worrisome has been developing around Tractor-Sazi FC of Tabriz as of late.

As many of you know, Tractor Makers were promoted to the top league last year, and became the first team from Azerbaijan region of Iran to play at the top level in over a decade. This was fantastic news for the football starved Azeri-Iranians who have had many football greats coming out of their ranks. Read more…
