Iran lose their opener to hosts Qatar in extra time

Iran v Qatar Iran National Team lost its first match in Qatar International Tournament against the host nation.

Playing on their home turf of Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium, the Qataris started the match with very swift and precise attacks and shocked Iran with two goals within the first ten minutes.

The first goal was scored by Ali Afif in the seventh minute. Qataris took advantage of Iranian defenders inability to clear the ball on their left side of the field, and sent the ball to Ali Afif with two accurate passes, and Afif opened the net with a beautiful left footed shot from inside the box. Will the Qatar Tournament be Afshin Ghotbi’s undoing?

Afshin Ghotbi has been in charge of Team Melli since April of 2009. Under his watch the team has played eleven competitive and friendly matches; winning four and losing three. In the process they have scored ten goals and allowed as many.

While this is not an earth shattering record, it is certainly not a terrible one; yet the coach is under severe criticism in the media, and has lost considerable support amongst the fans who have voted by their lack of attendance since the team was June 17 when the team was eliminated from the race to South Africa.

Kashani to contact Daei for Perspolis job

Ali Daei According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, Perspolis President Habib Kashani has confirmed that the club is planning to contact former Team Melli coach Ali Daei.

Coming out of a religious mourning ceremony on Saturday, Kashani was confronted by a few Perspolis fans who questioned the popular president about the coaching situation, and Kashani told them that the club is planning to formally contact Daei on Monday and offer him the job.
