Short Kick 2

Hi LastKickers!

It has been a while since the last time I did one of these, so I think it is about time. What I will try to do here is to give you a wrap up of the interesting news in the last few days. Most of the content will focus on Iranian football, but I will also mention a thing or two from Europe and around the world.

Yesterday the big rumor in Tehran was that Esteghlal Head Coach Samad Marfavi had resigned after yet another draw. Hi replacement was rumored to be Majid Namjoo-Motlagh. Well, as it turned out, Marfavi had not resigned, and Namjoo-Motlagh was named his first assistant. Apparently Marfavi has been given a two week grace period to turn the Blues’ fortunes around. Kid yourself not; Namjoo-Motlagh will replace Marfavi in two weeks! Rumors in Iranian football have a way of becoming reality. Read more…

Iran qualifies, but Ghotbi feels more heat

Afshin Afshar, lastkick.com

Afshin Ghotbi

Team Melli defeated Singapore earlier this week and qualified for Asian Cup 2011. This on the surface should be excellent news for the team, the fans, and the coaching staff. However, in Iranian football nothing is ever what it seems to be.

If the past is any indication, there will now be a push to replace Coach Afshin Ghotbi by those who do not approve of the job that he has done since his appointment in April of 2009.

Iran ousted Singapore in the Asian Cup 2011 qualifiers to secure their berth at the Qatar tournament, while the Singaporeans must wait until Matchday 6 to secure their own place.

Is It Do-Or-Die For Afshin Ghotbi And Iran Against Singapore?

Published on January 4, 2010 by in Team Melli

Afshin Ghotbi

Football is full of little ironies. Iran coach Afshin Ghotbi took Iran to within nine minutes of a (probable) World Cup place last June but then Park Ji-sung danced through the Persian defence to fire home an equaliser in Seoul to dash those dreams.

It was, Ghotbi admitted ruefully later, the kind of thing that he and Pim Verbeek had repeatedly demanded that the Manchester United man do more of during their time in South Korea.

Iran lose to Mali, now what?

Afshin Afshar, lastkick.com

Iran vs. Mali

Iran dropped its second match in Qatar International Tournament against Mali. Despite taking an early lead, they conceded two quick goals and lost the match 2-1.

As he said he had planned to do, coach Ghotbi tried a number of new players and different combinations in the back and midfield. With the crucial match against Singapore only a few days away, it only makes sense for the coach to not risk keeping his main team on the pitch for the duration of these friendly matches.

Days of Our Football Lives (Part 2)

Iran vs. Qatar

Iran’s Fresh Start

As Team Meli prepares to participate in the Qatar tournament, at the national level, Iran’s football begins a new era. Gone are the golden generation of Iran’s football that provided such players such as Abedzadeh, Daei, Bagheri, Azizi, Mahdavi Kia, Hashemian, Rezai and Ali Karimi. Position by position, Afshin Ghotbi has to try out and match talents for the starting line-up that have been waiting for years for veterans to retire to take their positions. Read more…
